A personal career strategy plan is a strategic roadmap that helps you explore, define, and achieve your career and professional goals. It guides you through a process of self-reflection, goal setting, and action planning so you can clearly identify where you want to go, assess where you are now, and determine the steps needed to close any gaps. This plan is important because it helps you make informed decisions, stay focused, and adapt as your interests or the job market evolves. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to pivot, a personal career development plan keeps you intentional and proactive about your career journey.

Create your own personal career development plan using this fillable template.
- Self Assessment: During the self-assessment stage you will want to assess 3 factors:
- Destination: Where do you want to take your career. This could include an assessment on values, interests, specific role(s) industries, or the impact you want to make.
- Current Situation: Take an honest look at your current skills, experiences, qualifications, areas of improvement, resources, etc.
- Gap Analysis: Compare your current situation to your destination to identify what’s missing. It might be a skill, experience, network, or qualification.
2. SMART Goals: After the assessment, you will put things into action.
- Turn your destination into clear and achievable goals. These goals will give you destination and vision direction and help you measure progress.
- Break your goal(s) into manageable steps and set deadlines. A timeline keeps you accountable and helps you make steady progress.
3. Resources to fill gaps: Research and identify university and external resources that can help you build what you need to reach your career destination and achieve your goals. Examples of resources could include:
- Classes (Brown, continuing education, professional development)
- Internships, co-ops, research
- Brown offices (Career Services, Sheridan Center, etc.)
- Mentorship or Networking
4. Monitor and track: Regularly check in on your progress and reflect on what’s working and what needs adjustment. Keep track of your wins, tasks, and obstacles, etc. to stay focused and motivated.
5. Adapt and Evolve
Your goals and interests may change—and that’s okay! Stay flexible and update your plan as you grow, learn, and discover new opportunities.
