If referred for this position by someone else within the company or by someone who knows the addressee, indicate that in the next sentence. I will soon be graduating with my master’s degree in [insert department/field] in [insert month and year of expected graduation] and am confident that the combination of my education and experience in X, Y and Z aligns with the mission of your organization. The last sentence in your introduction paragraph should be your thesis statement.

The first body paragraph should discuss how the “X” in your thesis relates to the position you are applying to. While working at company A, I was the team lead of… where I successfully implemented/performed/researched…give 1 example. The second part of the paragraph should directly relate the illustration to the current position. This experience allowed me to work with a variety of different stakeholders by analyzing their proposed intellectual property, which is a skill paramount to successfully execute the responsibilities of this position.

The second and third body paragraphs should discuss the “Y” and “Z”, respectively. Also explain how these experiences relate to this position that you are applying to.

I am confident that my academic experience, in addition to my past experiences and intricately developed skill set, makes me a strong candidate for [insert position title] role at [insert company name]. I am eager to contribute and collaborate with your [insert field] team to deliver exceptional outcomes. Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

A Thesis Statement is a statement that lists 3-4 skills that are relevant to the role you are applying for. It shows the reader that you have experience in the things they are looking for. The ‘Body’ of the letter elaborates on the thesis.

  • Use metrics and numbers wherever possible.
  • Always talk about experiences that are relevant and of interest to the employer.
  • Do not focus on how this experience will benefit you, instead tell them how you will bring value to the team with your skills and experiences.
